Bing - a big word from Microsoft

Bing search engine
New search engine from Microsoft Bing.com is already live. Engine of Bing is not used only by Bing.com but by MSN and Live.com, as well (all are owned by Microsoft).
So far Bing looks like easy to use Search engine that should help Microsoft to be recognized again in the market.
There are few main types of content you may search for: Web, Images, Videos, Shopping, News and Maps.

Web search
Results of web search are presented in nice and easy to read form. It is hard to say if Bing gives better results then other Search engines does because sometimes it is Bing that gives worst results and with different keywords it may be the other way.
Bing is using "geolocation" technology to provide users with the most accurate results regarding to their position.
If you search for well known topics then Bing may offer you a better results then others.
In the right side of result page there is a space for "sponsored links" so it looks like Microsoft would like to get more users by offering features similar to other search engines.

Search for Images
Like the others, Bing allows users to search for images. Bing's technology gives you opportunity to search for images similar to one that you prefer the most. Let's say you search for "tree". In results you will get about 32 million of images. If you move your cursor over the one that is similar to your expectations, you get a little window with information about image bellow your cursor and two options: show similar images and feedback on this image.
If you choose "show similar images" Bing searches for shapes and colors that are similar to previous image. This technology was used in few search engines before but this is first time when big search engine likne MSN and Live has this technology.

You have a few options how you can filter search results. For example you can choose preferred layout, color, style…
You can even choose size of thumbnails to make scanning in results easier for you.

Search engines (2.) – Search in all of them at once

The purpose of this article is to introduce you a few not so well known Search engines.

Reason why you may consider using one of them is that if you are searching on Google, you get results only from Google index databases, but Search engines listed bellow are looking into databases of more sources, so you get for example results from Yahoo.com and Google.com together.

It is very useful thing providing better coverage of web and it is called metasearch.

Here is a list of some popular Search engines that are using metasearch technology.

Clusty.com

Clusty Search Engine

Clusty is a Search engine with nice and simple user interface.

Clusty queries several top search engine, combines the results and generate ordered list on comparative ranking.

You can sort results by clusters, sources and sites. Clusters help you to see search results sorted by topics so you can find unexpected relations between them. And here you are, that is where the name Clusty came from.

Another nice feature of Clusty is that you can open sites from search results in "frame like"preview. This allows you to quickly scan through content and decide if that is what you are looking for.

Dogpile.com

Dogpile search engine

Dogpile.com is a search engine that combines results of six Search engines.

If you would like to search web and help animal rescue at once, Dogpile.com may be your choice.

Fandago.com

Sputtr.com

Sputtr search engine

Even that Sputtr.com is not exactly metasearch search engine decide to put it here. Reason is that it may be interesting for you, anyway.

Metasearch, like I explained before, works in the way that you search for specific keyword and you get results from more search engines.
What Sputtr does is that it allows you to choose where you want to search – what search engine you would like to use.

So, you for example you can try to search for videos on YouTube and after that you try on Google Videos.

To understand and see if you like it check Sputtr.com site.

MetaCrawler.com

MetaCrawler search engine

It is a good search engine that use indexes of mayor search engines. It allows you to set up preferences so you can create filter for your results.

Search engines (1.) - The most popular search engines

This is a list of the most popular search engines. If you have a website then make sure it is subscribed to all of them.

You can use this article as an inspiration what to use if you need to search for anything.

Google.com

Google search engine

No doubts this is the most used search engine. However do not fool yourself. You can’t find everything on Google.   (or sometimes it may be almost impossible to find it in the amount of junk you can get in results)

If it is crucial for your business to have access to particular kind of data then you should think about getting paid access to specialized databases. (For example databases of financial situation of each company, media monitoring, etc.)

But for most of us Google is the best start when searching.

Other services: Mail, Images, Videos, News, Maps… and lots of useful applications for developers

Yahoo.com

yahoo search engine

Yahoo is another big search engine with a lot of users. Yahoo is not only search engine but it offers other services and applications. You can get most of them from Google, too.

You can vote in my survey if you are using Yahoo so we can see how many Yahoo funs is out there.

Other services: Mail, Images, Videos, News, Finance…and more

Cuil.com

Cuil search engine

Cuil.com is quite new search engine. It was first time introduced to public in July 2008. I am getting more and more visitors from this search engine to my websites so it looks like people are starting to use it.

The best thing about Cuil.com is that Cuil doesn’t keep data about you.

This is total difference from lets say Google, that keeps your personal data and then use it for marketing purposes and hell know for what else. This means that if you search on Google for particular services and articles, powerful algoritms on their servers are making profile about you so then you can be targeted with more effective marketing.  You can see that company behind Cuil has their own view about doing business with search engines.

I personally like design of this portal so if you never tried it before then it may be the right time.

As mentioned before if you prefer searching without someone storing data about every your movement and creating your personal and psychological profiles then go for Cuil.com.

Other services: no, Cuil is search engine and nothing else

AOL.com

AOL search engine

This search engine is partly owned by Google and if you have a look on AOL.com website you can see announcement that search is enhanced by Google.  But AOL has its own indexes. AOL looks more like directory then search engine and for some people this is an enhancement, especially when they know category that contains what they need.

Other services: Mail, Images, Video, News, Finance…and more

Ask.com

Ask search engine

Ask.com is another search engine with huge group of users.

Ask.com offers you feature called AskEraser to delete your searches from their servers. Another "nice to have" feature is that you can change skin if you do not like the default one.

Other services: Images, Video, News, Maps and Answers

msn.com

msn search engine

Msn is an information portal or collection of Internet services provided by well known company – Microsoft.

MSN is using the same search engine like Live.com Main difference between Msn and Live is that on Msn you have access to other information in "directory like" interface.

Msn as well as Live.com are starting with new search engine called Bing (since June 2009).

Bing is the answer to biggest competitors of Microsoft - Google and Yahoo.

Other services: Hotmail, Images, Video, News, Maps…and more
